I bought this book because I wanted to improve my sewing skills in a methodical, structured, and non-intimidating way. After researching many options I settled on this one because it offered the best mix of projects, with each project gradually building in difficulty and techniques. It’s well-balanced, succinct, and relatively compact. And the step-by-step photographs are fantastic, which is especially helpful for visual learners. In addition to instructions for 12 beautiful and useful home decor and accessories projects, there's a good part of the book that covers things like choosing a sewing machine (which was very helpful when I was deciding on my machine), fabrics, colors, notions, and pressing. It doesn't dwell too long an any of these things, but gives just enough detail and advice to get started.I am completely in love with this book and carry it with me all around the house, re-reading sections, planning my projects, drooling over the photos of fabric. I also really like the story of the origin of this book -- how the author brought together a group of new sewers and taught them one project at a time how to develop their sewing abilities and confidence. This isn't the only sewing book you'll need (for example, it doesn't cover garments, and it's not an encyclopedia of all sewing techniques) but if you're looking to get started with sewing I highly recommend this one.
After receiving this book yesterday, I took the time to thorough go through it, page by page. I have been sewing since early high school, well over 45 years. This is really a book for everyone and anyone. It is great for beginners, as it covers all aspects of sewing and supplies, and then takes them step by step through projects, starting with some easy and achievable, and then builds on those skills through each project until they sew a quilt. Along the way, beginners will learn a lot about zippers, buttons, buttonholes--a lot of skills that will transfer to apparel sewing as well. A fun aspect of the book is that Shea taught a group of beginners for a year, and you get a real sense of what the class was like for them, with sidebars where they share comments and thoughts. For the experienced seamstress, it works as a great reference guide--everything all in one place. I know I will keep it close to my sewing table. The whole book is well thought out, well written and beautifully photographed.
This book is so good. At first, I was unimpressed with the projects. A pillowcase, drawstring bag? I thought- Oh yawn. But then I used the book and wow! For a sewing geek, it is gold. The pillowcase project is the best I've ever made. I know two other methods for pillowcase construction 1) band and body and 2) flat construction and this book beats them all. The seams line up perfectly every time and the method is quick and non-fussy. The drawstring bag is equally good. It is virtually the only method that avoids basting seams or fraying at the drawstring opening. The zipper pouch is a great introduction to zipper insertion, a technique that usually induces hyperventilation in new sewers. This method is elegant and simple, which makes a newbie feel successful. I'm a three spool sewer, but I appreciated the simple tips for these projects.
I was introduced to this book at a local craft store that was teaching lessons from it. I had never sewn before and found these projects great for beginners, I left class feeling excited about sewing! Ive made most of the projects since on my own and love them. The instructions and information about sewing tools and fabrics are great for a newbie like myself. You won't regret this purchase if you're interested in learning a new skill! The picture is of a clutch that I made using the book. Adorbs :)
I got it from the library, then renewed it three times (the max allowed). Thought I'd better just buy it myself. Very happy with the first two projects, which I've made in various color combinations. Finished items look professional with french seams (no loose edges) for example, and that's only from project one! Lots of fun to search for beautiful or fun fabrics and then use them in projects. I'm loving it!
As a VERY beginner sewer, this book is extremely helpful! The list of supplies in the beginning of the book helped me create a list for a Jo-Anne's trip. There's a thorough explanation of techniques and simple guidelines. We used this book in combination with a beginner pattern, we bought elsewhere, to create a beautiful top! Highly recommended.
I think the order of them should be changed up a little for skill progression but i enjoyed making samples for the class I will teach with this book. The pleated purse instructions do need to be revised though bc the lining is too big and the top of the body is too wide after the lower body is pleated
This is a fabulous book! I'm not a beginner sewer, but it helped refresh me on some techniques I haven't used in a while, such as zippers and buttonholes. It also had some great tips and shortcuts that were new to me. I also love the whole premise of the book, in that a group of women actually got together regularly and held a sewing school. You can download printables off the School of Sewing webpage if you want to teach others to sew! The book is well-written and beautifully designed and photographed.
