#109,971 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is not as much a narrative of survival at sea but instead a mosaic consisting of anecdotes combined with a narrative of what shipping was like in the mid-19th century. The first hundred pages or so consist entirely of painting a picture of commercial shipping at the time the John Rutledge sank. We then get a few pages of life aboard concentrating on the Irish immigrants in steerage and then the wreck.I had a great deal of difficulty with the book’s manner. The author, in the introduction, says it’s impossible to know the dialog and thoughts of the people on the ship but averaging several times a page, he supplies an entirely fictional thought or speech from some character. Every time I encountered this it set my teeth on edge. Also while there is a bibliography, there are no foot or end notes so the source of what the author writes, if it stems from research, isn’t traceable back to the source. The publisher’s note says the author used Nye’s (the sole survivor) journal but the narrative of him in the lifeboat doesn’t have him writing a journal nor does the bibliography include any writings by Nye. Well, the author does say the bibliography only contains some of the material he used to construct the book. I also have to call into question the detail the author goes into about the doings aboard the lifeboat as one by one each passenger save one died. The only source for this would be Nye himself, but for a good deal of the time he was barely conscious so how can we rely on his later telling of what occurred?I’d guess the story of the sinking of the John Rutledge and the experience in the lifeboat containing Nye takes up only about 50 pages. That’s the heart of the story but it leaves a lot of blank pages if you want to write a full-length book. So the author stuffs in much about shipping or interesting anecdotes such as Nye’s family, the culture of New Bedford and Liverpool plus as a bonus short but fascinating accounts such as the first Japanese citizen to immigrate to the US and a story about the actor, Tyrone Power’s, distant ancestor.Still, in the end the only facts we have are that the ship sank due to an iceberg hit, 13 folks got in a poorly equipped lifeboat and nine days later the sole survivor was rescued. The details of all that happened on those nine days stems from Nye’s personal remembrance which may be self-aggrandizing. For example, he claims that a particular action on all the survivors other than him caused their deaths, but we can’t really be sure of it. Perhaps he horded some supplies and when all were too weak to resist, he killed his fellow passengers to steal their clothes or foodstuffs. So in sum, we have a unverifiable lifeboat story consisting of maybe 1/5 of the book and quite a bit of extraneous material about the mid-19th century shipping with an emphasis on the packet trade. The final part of the book consists of not so informative plates such as snapshots of gravestones or reprints of newspapers. Interesting and also frustrating, we don’t get much about the protagonist Nye after he returned to New Bedford. The only thing I’m sure of is he chose never to return to the sea – an eminently understandable choice on his part. I never got used to the author’s insertion of words and thoughts by the players (XYZ was concerned about her daughter) or the non-linking of assertions to sources. My conclusion is that there simply wasn’t sufficient material for a full-length book so we have the core of 50 pages surrounded by often extraneous material with the core being unverifiable and the rest not linked to its sources. The core 50 pages were poignant and exciting. The surrounding material, except in a few instances, much less so. I consider this more a fictional tale than a researched history.

Amazon had the kindle edition on sale and the storyline really intrigued me! It turned out to be a great read! The author not only told the story of the voyage but also the sinking of the packet ship with loss of life! The 5 lifeboats were cast off into the storm but only one was recovered! Of the 13 people on the lifeboat on!y one survived! A great tale of the sea! The family histories of the people involved were included and made fascinating reading! Other stories of ships lost during this time are included as well!

This historical story was written about a member of my husband's family. I have passed this book on to my children as well as bought it as a family Christmas gift.

I like true stories, especially about the untamed sea and her power. And, about people with fortitude who refuse to throw in the towel under the most horrific of circumstances. This well-written book covers all of this. An exceptionally good read, with a bit of seafaring history thrown in.

I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I I did. I really felt like I was on that dinghy with Thomas and the other survivors. The writer did an excellent job of taking you back to 1856. The explanationg of ships back in that era was very detailed. If you like history, you'll like this book.

intrigued by the history of that time late 1800 hundreds alantic sea migration of immigrents to USA . the story of how one servier made it.

Eh. Not awful but a little boring. Too much detail about his family history. Skipped pages to get to the end.

Couldn't put the book down ...the writer captured the moments of this voyage...You felt like you were on the life raft...Excellent research and story...
